'Those final few hours were brutal': British pair finish extraordinary voyage in Australia after rowing across Pacific Ocean

One more day. Another day battling through the unforgiving ocean. One more day of blistered hands gripping unforgiving oars.

However following over 15,000 kilometers at sea – a monumental half-year voyage through Pacific waters that included intimate meetings with marine giants, defective signaling devices and cocoa supply emergencies – the waters delivered a last obstacle.

A gusting 20-knot wind near Cairns repeatedly forced their small vessel, their boat Velocity, from the terra firma that was now painfully near.

Loved ones gathered on land as a scheduled lunchtime finish became 2pm, then 4pm, then twilight hours. At last, at eighteen forty-two, they came alongside Cairns Yacht Club.

"Those final few hours were brutal," Rowe expressed, eventually on solid ground.

"The wind was pushing us off the channel, and we genuinely believed we might fail. We drifted outside the navigational path and considered swimming the remaining distance. To ultimately arrive, after extensive preparation, seems absolutely amazing."

The Extraordinary Expedition Starts

The UK duo – aged 28 and 25 respectively – pushed off from Lima, Peru in early May (a first try in April was halted by steering issues).

During 165 ocean days, they covered approximately 50 sea miles each day, working as a team through daytime hours, individual night shifts while her teammate dozed just a few hours in a confined sleeping area.

Survival and Challenges

Sustained by 400 kilograms of dehydrated meals, a saltwater conversion device and an onboard growing unit for micro-greens, the women counted on a less-than-reliable solar system for only partial electrical requirements.

During most of their voyage through the expansive ocean, they've had no navigation equipment or signaling devices, turning them into a "ghost ship", hardly noticeable to maritime traffic.

The pair have borne 9-metre waves, traversed marine highways and survived violent tempests that, at times, shut down every electronic device.

Record-Breaking Achievement

Still they maintained progress, each pull following the last, through scorching daylight hours, under star-filled night skies.

They established a fresh milestone as the first all-female pair to paddle over the South Pacific, non-stop and unsupported.

Furthermore they gathered in excess of £86k (Australian $179,000) for the Outward Bound Trust.

Daily Reality at Sea

The women attempted to keep in contact with the world beyond their small boat.

Around day one-forty, they reported a "chocolate emergency" – diminished to merely two remaining pieces with over 1,000 miles remaining – but permitted themselves the luxury of opening one bar to mark the English squad's victory in the World Cup.

Individual Perspectives

Payne, hailing from inland Yorkshire, was unacquainted with maritime life before her solo Atlantic crossing in 2022 in a record time.

She has now mastered another ocean. Yet there were periods, she conceded, when they doubted their success. As early as day six, a path over the planet's biggest sea seemed unachievable.

"Our electrical systems were diminishing, the freshwater system lines broke, yet after numerous mends, we achieved an alternative solution and simply continued struggling with minimal electricity throughout the remaining journey. Each time problems occurred, we just looked at each other and went, 'typically it occurred!' But we kept going."

"Having Jess as a partner proved invaluable. What was great was that we worked hard together, we problem-solved together, and we consistently shared identical objectives," she said.

Rowe hails from Hampshire. Prior to her Pacific success, she rowed the Atlantic, trekked England's coastal trail, scaled the Kenyan peak and cycled across Spain. Additional challenges probably remain.

"We shared such wonderful experiences, and we're already excited to plan new adventures together as well. No other partner would have sufficed."
